Some of those students leave school on Friday not knowing what they will eat over the weekend. A new program in the works will help students know they will be provided for – Bear Necessities. “The Bear Necessities backpack program is reflective of the commitment our churches and schools have for our students. Several programs for the elderly, including the Meals on Wheels program administered by the Area Agency on Aging, could be hard-hit by the Congressional sequester. Bettye Mitchell, director of the agency, which is an arm of the East Texas Council of Governments, said the federal budget cuts could impact counseling programs for seniors; the ombudsman program; caregiver and case management; transportation and nutrition programs which includes both home-delivered Meals on Wheels and congregate meals for seniors who can drive. Letter carriers across the area are working a little longer today, motivated by compassion for the less fortunate and a friendly cross-town rivalry. For the 20th year, Longview members of the National Association of Letter Carriers are picking up sacks of non-perishable food donated for local nonprofit groups alongside outgoing mail. The nationwide event harvested 70.7 million pounds of food this past year; with Sheri Blackmon’s Mobberly Street post office collecting 10,250 pounds to beat the city’s Northwest post office by 1,106 pounds. Feeding America announced today that it received a $500,000 grant from AARP Foundation in support of its Senior Grocery Program. The program provides low-income older adults who are at risk of hunger access to nutritious food, including fresh produce, which they can easily prepare and consume at home. The food provided through the Senior Grocery Program complements the shelf stable food eligible older Americans receive through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), a federal program that includes people older than 60. Also, the Senior Grocery Program helps address the growing food needs of older Americans not served through the U.S. government feeding program. The East Texas Food Bank is a recipient of this grant, and is using it to expand the current Senior Box Program. (Read more Feeding America)

From April 1 to April 30, more than 443,000 votes were cast for the more than 300 eligible Feeding America food banks and partner agencies as part of a campaign to fight hunger in local communities. Customers were invited to cast votes at www.walmart.com/hunger for the eligible organization of their choosing and as a result, 100 food banks and partner feeding agencies were selected as grant winners. The aroma of grilling steaks wafted through the air as a record number of local teams battled for the Ace of Steaks championship belt and other prizes in the third annual steak cookoff staged at FRESH by Brookshires on Saturday. Comparatively, Mission Marshall is a fairly new organization in our city, though it brings together some services that have been around for a while. However, it seems to have energized those services, as well as expanded into others. Supported by the city’s churches, Mission Marshall is one of the reasons we have to feel good about the place where we live. People helping people who are in need. It isn’t any surprise that this is taking place here. Most, if not all, those involved feel they have been called to do it as a basis of their religion. ission West Lake was formed in 2000 by Neta and John Emmons to serve the growing needs of the people who live within seven miles of West Lake Baptist Church near Lake Palestine. In the 13 years since the food pantry has opened, its has continued to serve more and more families in the area. When it opened in June 2000, six families – 11 adults and six children – were served. Last month, 125 families benefited from the once-a-month service provided by the pantry.
