15,000 Summer Weekend Meals Provided
to East Texas Children thanks to the
ConAgra Foods Foundation’s
Hunger‐Free Summer Program

(Tyler, Texas) October 15, 2012 – The East Texas Food Bank continued expanding its Summer
Weekend Meal Program thanks to a $20,000 gift from ConAgra Foods Foundation for their Hunger‐
Free Summer Program. This gift allowed the East Texas Food Bank to provide nearly 15,000 meals
over the weekend at twelve (12) rural Summer Food Service Program sites. The bags were given out
on Fridays to those children who participate in the Summer Food Service Program during the week
and are at‐risk of hunger on the weekends.

The bags of nutritious food were distributed at: Boys & Girls Club of Rusk County, Our Lady of
Sorrows Catholic Church, Sweet Union Apartment Complex, Benson Memorial CME Church, Zion hill
Baptist Church, Summit Heights Fellowship, Annie Simms Elementary School, E.C. Brice Elementary
School, Vivian Fowler Primary School, Washington Elementary School, Palestine YMCA, and Hawkins
Independent School District. These twelve (12) sites were chosen due to the high level of need in the
communities where they operate – underserved, rural communities where there is a high
concentration of child poverty, but a low number of feeding agencies and child hunger programs.

“Our backpack programs play a vital role in filling the weekend hunger gap for students while school
is in session.” said Dennis Cullinane, executive director of the East Texas Food Bank. “Thanks to
Conagra Foods Foundation’s Hunger‐Free Summer Program, we were able to complement our
Summer Food Program in continuing to meet the needs of children during the summer weekends.”

This is the third consecutive year that the East Texas Food Bank has received a Hunger‐Free Summer
Program grant from the ConAgra Foods Foundation. In 2011, support from the ConAgra Foods
Foundation Hunger‐Free Summer Program enabled the East Texas Food Bank to provide weekend
food assistance to needy children at ten (10) Summer Food Service Program sites. In 2010, outreach
and transportation efforts at several rural Summer Food Service Program sites were supported by the
ConAgra Foods Foundation.
