Controller

Position Summary:

The Controller at The East Texas Food Bank will serve as a key member of the financial team, overseeing all financial functions of the organization. This role is responsible for managing accounting operations, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, preparing financial statements, and supporting strategic financial planning. The Controller will ensure the efficient use of resources to achieve the mission of alleviating hunger and fostering community partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Reporting:

  • Oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the annual budget development process in collaboration with the leadership team and department heads.

Audit and Compliance:

  • Coordinate and manage the annual external audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax and regulatory filings, including 990s and state reporting requirements.
  • Maintain proper internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.

Team Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to provide financial insights for strategic decision-making.
  • Support fundraising efforts by providing financial information for grant applications and donor reporting.

Strategic Planning:

  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Board of Directors to provide financial analysis and projections to support organizational growth.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage investments to align with the organization’s financial strategy.

Technology and Process Improvement:

  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, processes, and software to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Ensure financial data integrity and implement best practices in financial management.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA designation preferred).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, audit practices, and internal controls.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Work Environment:

  • This position typically operates in an office environment but may require occasional travel for meetings or events.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours during audits, financial deadlines, or special projects.
